Salerno – Italy

Arrived at our next stop after a delayed train journey, hope that’s not a sign of future trips. Found our airbnb easily, only about a 20 minute walk from the station, and it’s a nice clean modern apartment overlooking a fairly busy street. Went out and found the beach nearby which looks really nice, had a couple of beers and did some food shopping. Then just chilled out for the evening, cooked some nice food in and watched some TV for a bit and then finished off with some wine on our little balcony.

First full day in Salerno we had organised a guided walking tour around the old city of Pompei. Walked along the seafront to our pick up point and as we drove through the town we realised that this place has a lot to offer, plenty going on and feels like Salerno has got a lot of character, look forward to exploring more on Monday.

Anyway the volcano ravaged city of Pompei is well worth a visit, we booked the tour through Get Your Guide and our guide was excellent. Takes about 45 minutes to get there and then the walk takes about 2 hours. It’s a very popular and therefore a very busy place to visit, but don’t let that put you off. It’s an extraordinary achievement to literally unearth a city that has been buried under ash and pumice for nearly 2000 years, and the project is still ongoing, 44 acres out of 66 have been uncovered and that started from the early 1800’s.

The following images are plastercasts of real people that died in the city following the eruption. Basically they were covered in ash and pumice, but over the years as the bodies decomposed they left a cavity in the space that they had been lying, so some archeological expert found a way of injecting plaster of paris into the space they had created, and then after it had set carefully excavated the plastercast to reveal the body that had been laying there for hundreds of years.
