Had a lovely ferry journey from Paros and arrived at a very busy Naxos port. Walked to our apartment and first impression of the town is that it’s very nice. We were able to check in early and the airbnb was very nice too. Found a supermarket to get some provisions, and then headed out for a walk to the nearest beach, Agios Georgious, only about 5 minute walk away. It was a fairly windy day so we just had a walk up and down the beach, had a nice drink at one of the many beach bars, and then headed home. Went out for a pizza tonight and it was an excellent one.

Day 2 in Naxos we decided not hire a car here and try out the buses instead. A pretty chaotic bus terminal near the port but managed to get on a bus to Agios Prokopois beach. It’s a wonderful long sandy beach, different to beaches we’ve been to so far. Water is stunning and there is a fabulous taverna at the far end with views to die for. A great day of sunshine and sea.

Day 3 it was another bus trip to Plaka beach, a bit further down from yesterday. The buses are pretty good to be fair, and quite cheap as you would expect. Plaka beach is the longest stretch of sand on the island, and it was a beauty. Good mix of sunbeds and large sandy areas where you can just put your towel down, another skinny dip area as there was plenty of nudists enjoying the beach. We also had a very nice little lunch break at a taverna called Maistrali. They serve lovely home cooked greek dishes. We shared a moussaka and a greek salad, lovely, plus a carafe of local rose wine.
In the evening after we decided to go and explore Naxos in the evening to see what the atmosphere was like. Surprised by how busy it was at this time of year, but it wasn’t overcrowded, and we really enjoyed walking around a very pretty town

Day 4 we headed off to a beach called Alyko, it was the furthest away, about 1 hour on the bus, and from what we read it was a peaceful, tranquil beach with no facilities and beautiful water and scenery. We were surprised therefore that when we got there it was very busy, far more people than we expected, and lots of children who should be at school surely?
Yes it was a nice pretty beach and also a nearby cove called Hawaii was also very nice, but we were a bit disappointed that there were so many people there which we hadn’t expected.

Day 5 we headed back to Agios Prokopois for another day of bliss, and then headed out to a recommended restaurant nearby for an evening meal. The restaurant is Eliniko and it’s a fabulous setting. Food is very good, but be warned the portion sizes are large, so unless you have a very large appetite it would be sensible to share a plate.
Day 6 the wind was back so we stayed local, walked around the old town and up to the top where there is a castle and a museum, but couldn’t see too much as there was a lot of renovation works going on. It was still a very nice walk around the town, such a nice vibe, and then we went to Agios Georgios beach in town and found a sheltered spot for a couple of hours sunbathing before heading back to the airbnb late afternoon, where I was able to watch the start of the Ryder cup. Cooking up a nice seafood spaghetti meal tonight and then heading off again tomorrow.
