So we left Auckland and New Zealand on the 7th April and arrived in Rarotonga, Cook islands on the 6th April, no that’s not a mis type. We crossed the maritime line during the journey which means you literally go back in time. If you have a job that involves commuting to and fro between NZ and the Cook islands it must be a nightmare. So I now have 2 separate diary entries of 7th April, how unique is that!
Anyway from Rarotonga we got a short domestic flight to the idealic island of Aitutaki, where we will be spending 7 days, before heading back to Rarotonga for our last 2 weeks. First impression of Aitutaki is that it’s extremely laid back, peaceful and beautiful, so we should be pretty happy here.

Day 2 we had to walk to the local shops to get some provisions and some booze. We also decided that we will need a car to get around, having also decided that we weren’t comfortable hiring a scooter due to the fact we’ve never ridden one before. Spent the afternoon on a very nice beach in glorious warm sunshine and tourquoise water.
Day 3 we had our little car delivered so went off for an explore around this beautiful island, and found a supermarket to get some supplies, not a great deal of choice here though it must be said. Then spent the rest of the day on Ootu beach, which is absolutely fabulous.
Day 4 we explored another beach 5 minutes from our bungalow, another paradise beach and crystal clear water for snorkelling. It was more of the same on day 5 sharing our time between Ootu and the beach near our bungalow. The beaches on the western side of the island are better for swimming and sunbathing. There’s also a lovely beach bar/restaurant at Ootu with views to die for. We had a lovely lunch there today as well. Blue Lagoon Restaurant and bar

Day 6 we went on a lagoon cruise which was fantastic. The island of Aitutaki is surrounded by a huge reef which provides it with a massive lagoon. This protects the island from storms and dangerous sea animals like sharks. It’s also home to a collection of pristine paradise islands, and the water is just an amazing array of colours, greens, blues and turquoise which provide jaw dropping views. It’s also a snorkelling delight with hundreds of species of fish and marine life. Found myself up close and personal to some giant trevalli today, amongst other things. It really is a great thing to do, and there are plenty of providers to choose from.

Last night in Aitutaki, went to Tava’e restaurant and had a lovely sunset meal to finish our time here in style.
