Thessaloniki

So we arrived at our first stop in Greece on Sunday afternoon, after an incredibly smooth journey by taxi, plane, bus and metro, and were able to check in to our airbnb 2 hours early.

Only problem is that on a Sunday all supermarkets here are closed, so we had to forage around to find bits of food and booze of course at small mini market type of shops, which are more expensive, still needs must.

Our apartment is very nice, fairly well equipped and nice little balcony to sit out enjoy a beer or vino listening to some tunes in the evening. I was able to watch the Brighton v Everton game and the final round of the Fedex cup golf so that was good, well sort of as Brighton lost.

On our first full day in the city we walked into the centre which is a nice mix of old historic buildings and modern architecture, took about 30 minutes to get there, but there is a good metro service if you don’t fancy walking. We were supposed to go on a guided walking tour but the guide was sick, so doing that tomorrow now. Did our own mini tour of the city, then stocked up at a very nice supermarket nearby. Here’s some images of day 1.

So day 2 we went on a guided walking tour booked via Get your Guide. A nice informative 2 hours, seeing parts of the city we didn’t see yesterday and learning about some of the culture and history.

After that on the recommendation of our guide we took a number 50 bus up to the top of the city (only 2 euros each) where the castle is situated, the only part of the city that wasn’t severely damaged by the great fire. Some scenic views to enjoy from the top and then a nice downhill amble through winding narrow streets back to the modern city centre.

Back at the apartment it was time to rest up and enjoy a home cooked meal of chicken, chips and salad.

Day 4 and our last day in Thessaloniki we decided to take a ferry boat to a Perea beach, about an hour away. Nice journey and enjoyed an easy afternoon on the sand. Wouldn’t say this was in our 10 top beaches by any stretch, but it was nice to just chill out and enjoy a swim and sunbathing. Had a fantastic greek salad, 2 beers and a caraff of rose wine for 21 euros as well, which was excellent value.

Went out for a nice meal on the way back from the beach, again very good value, and tasty food. Overall we enjoyed Thessaloniki, not a wow city but worth a visit for a few days.
