We had a long drive up to Napier today, most of it was quite enjoyable, especially Route 52 which winded it’s way over fabulous countryside for about 3 hours. Got stuck behind a flock of sheep (see video below), stopped at a little pub in a place called Pongoroa and had a rather unusual hot dog.

We arrived at our accommodation, which is a delightful little cottage within walking distance of the town. Went out to get some supplies and cooked up some chicken fajitas for dinner. On day 1 we drove to a place called Te Mata, a big range of hills with a peak that provides wonderful views all around the Napier area. Then went to look at Westshore beach, a rugged piece of coastline just north of Napier, before going into the town and having a stroll around. It’s a very nice city, nice vibe, plenty of places to eat and drink, bit of a retro feel to it.

Final day in Napier we went on a Hawkes Bay winery tour which was good fun. Went to 4 different wineries, all of whom were very generous with their tastings, so we both felt quite tipsy by the end of it. Our host for the day was Craig who was a lovely guy from Avantogo. Would recommend him if you want a nice little wine tour. He also does other bespoke trips if you want a different itinerary.
